The women behind SCARLETT GASQUE

Scarlett Gasque was born from a love and respect for vintage glamour girls of the 1940s and 50s with dreams to bring traditional lingerie styles back into the mainstream; restoring vintage elements of provocative burlesque touched up with a modern vision. With a dash of glamour, a drop of sensuality and a hefty dose of camp wit, Scarlett Gasque is the go-to brand for the daring, the carnal and the coy. We want to uplift our diverse customers and encourage them to continue to proudly live their authentic lives, celebrating all the delicious shapes, styles and forms we all come in. Enter the magical world of Scarlett Gasque, but be warned, you might never want to leave…

Both the brains and the beauty behind the brand, Chloé Rogers founded Scarlett Gasque in 2020 with bright ambitions to be part of a movement celebrating the art of burlesque and encouraging sexual freedom and expression. As a young woman, Chloé found herself always drawing inspiration from burlesque dancers, vintage pinup stars and glamour girls of the 1950s. Not just for their stylish and decadent clothing but for their fierce attitude towards female empowerment and unique approach to engaging with political and cultural topics. Whilst studying at Central Saint Martins in London, UK, Chloé became further obsessed with the history of fashion, in particular with traditional corsetry, and eventually wrote her final dissertation on ‘Feminine Politics within Burlesque’.

Chloé not only wanted to bring traditional corsetry styles to the mainstream market, but she desired to create a collection that was too pretty to be hidden away underneath clothes; these pieces are designed to be seen.

Our Inspiration

Scarlett Gasque also draws inspiration from many sensual, charismatic and charming darlings from across history such as Hollywood bombshells, risqué pin-ups, and erotic burlesque dancers. These include, but most certainly are not limited to:

Jayne Mansfield, an iconic bombshell of the 50s and 60s and was known as the ‘Working Man’s Monroe‘. She gained fame and pin-up status when she posed for Playboy in 1955. She was not only known for her bleached blonde waves, beautiful curves and her signature love of the colour pink but also her unwavering self-confidence. Her sense of style was unique and daring, she was a master of self-publicity and loved to push the limits of decency. Although people characterised her as a ‘dumb blond’ she was incredibly intelligent, Ms. Mansfield was fluent in 5 languages and was believed to have an IQ of 163!

Hollywood actress Rita Hayworth was popularly addressed as ‘The Love Goddess’ and is still known as one of the most glamorous actresses In the history of Hollywood. Rita was also known as a woman who exudes style and beauty and was the top pin-up girl for GIs during World War II. Rita was not only a leading woman but was also a leading fashion trendsetter. Jean Louis, chief designer to the stars of the “Golden Age,” took her as his muse. She was always adorned in lace and silks, not afraid to wear figure-hugging dresses and loved to stand out in florals. As an actress, she pushed the envelope on what was acceptable in terms of sex appeal and will forever be remembered for her striptease in Gilda (1946) considered by some the most famous film scene ever.

Josephine Baker was an American-born French entertainer, who became Europe's most popular and highest-paid performer. She worked for the French Resistance during World War II, and during the 1950s and '60s devoted herself to fighting segregation and racism, using the stage as her tool with performances that were highly comedic to subtly challenge social norms and engage with political issues of its day. Baker was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics, as well as becoming the first American woman in history to receive French military honours.

One of the most beloved and beautiful actresses of all time, Elizabeth Taylor maintained the people’s fascination with her incandescent beauty, her courage, her open-natured character and her self-deprecating wit. Not only was she an Oscar-winning actress, but Taylor was also a celebrated philanthropist who tirelessly fought to help those suffering from AIDS and worked to fund research for a cure. She travelled all over the world to educate people about the disease, feeling an urge to create a lasting impression on the world beyond her films.

Dita Von Teese is the biggest name in modern-day burlesque. Dita, a ballerina turned strip tease icon, is known for her signature martini glass burlesque act. She has been performing striptease since 1992 and is recognized for bringing the art of burlesque back into the spotlight with a new sense of elegance and sophistication. Not only does she hold the moniker of the Queen of Burlesque, but she is also known for being a self-styled fashion icon, topping best-dressed lists all over the world. Known for her signature red lips, cat eye eyeliner, and perfectly waved black hair, Dita continues to promote old-school glamour and sex appeal to modern audiences.

Our Heritage

Scarlett Gasque is inspired by many different snippets in time and formidable women, but first, what’s in a name?

Our founder, Chloé, honoured her rich heritage by naming her brand after women in her family. 'Scarlett’ comes from Chloé’s maternal great-grandmother, a hard-working woman born in Budapest. She raised her daughter with strength and tenacity, paving the way for Chloé’s grandmother to immigrate to Canada. She was well read, always with her nose in a novel, enjoyed the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood cinema and was passionate about global politics. Despite her humble beginnings, Chloé’s great-grandmother was an opinionated woman, never afraid to speak her mind or tackle philosophical debates, but perhaps most importantly she helped shape Chloé’s grandmother and mother into the kind, strong and tenacious women they are today.

‘Gasque’ honours another very influential woman in Chloé’s family, her paternal great-grandmother, Maude Gasque. Maude was born in London, UK, and was described as a pillar of strength to her husband, family and country, receiving the honour of being appointed the Lady Martonmere of Blackpool in 1964. During World War II, Maysie joined the allied forces in Rome after the liberation from Nazi Germany, as an assistant nurse and continued to take her services to her country and crown incredibly seriously and with honour after receiving her title. Maysie married Sir John Roland Robinson, who she affectionately called ‘Jack’, and who served as an MP for 33 years for Blackpool South, later being appointed as the Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda.
